Volunteer
Many of our members volunteer at the library. Typically this takes the form of one-off roles supporting staff at events, or in longer-term roles supporting the day-to-day running of the library, for example as book conservators, shelvers and tour guides. Last year, we worked with 129 volunteers who give approximately 2,800 hours per year (the equivalent of approximately £34,000 in staff time) to the library. We don’t currently have any volunteer roles available but, when we do, we’ll post information on this page so please check regularly.
Make A Donation
You can help to secure our future. As as a registered charity, we rely on membership subscriptions and other income streams to continue to deliver our library services and maintain our building and collections. This can only go so far. The upkeep of a Georgian building is costly and we rely on additional funding for larger projects, such as our plan to install a lift.
We welcome donations of all sizes. If you would like to make a one-off donation or set up a regular donation you can do this securely online. Alternatively please contact the library here to discuss making a donation.
Please note that we rarely accept donations of books, due to pressure on space. If you’d like to discuss a possible book donation, please contact us.
Adopt A Book
We have nearly 50,000 books, many of which pre-date the Library and even the building itself. Some are in need of a little TLC! Years of being pulled on and off shelves, the smoke from coal fires, rooms that were too damp or too dry, and the occasional insect, have all taken their toll. We are working to improve the conditions in the library to ensure the longer-term preservation of our books, and simple cleaning and conservation measures are completed in-house. However, some of the books require more complex work than we can do in the library, and these would benefit from the attentions of a bookbinder. Our Adopt a Book scheme allows you to donate money to support a book to be repaired and rebound. If you adopt an individual book, we will place a customised book plate inside the cover to record your generosity.

Leave A Gift In Your Will
We can’t all donate large sums to charitable causes but, for many of us, a gift left in our will is the most significant gift we will ever make. By leaving a legacy to Bromley House Library, you will support our continued existence. Without acts of philanthropy like this throughout our history, it’s fair to say that the library would not be here today. There are practical benefits to leaving a gift in your will. Your gift will be free of inheritance tax because we are a charity and a donation in your will can help to reduce the tax liabilities on your estate.
If you’d like more information about legacy giving, please contact the Library Director. Any enquiries will be treated in the strictest confidence.
